Started my day off with another gorgeous sunrise over the Mediterranean and I am getting much too spoiled this way. We docked in Palma de Mallorca around 7:00am so it was an early start to a very pleasurable day. What a c
harming seaside town that have very new architecture intermingled with ancient ruins and gorgeous Gothic and various Spanish influenced buildings, churches and monuments.
We walked for about three hours straight as the distance from the Ship to the old town was pretty lengthy but the walk was almost entirely by the extensive marina with no exaggeration at least a 1,000 or more yachts, sail boats and fishing vessels. I’ve never seen so many in one place in my
life and the sight was breathtaking from beginning to end. We even made a stop at a local cafe to use the internet and enjoy the coffee and hot chocolate, yum, yum. I really enjoyed seeing the local fisherman working with their colorful nets as they fixed some holes and also laid them out to try. It is very mu
ch a tourist city but the closer you get to the old town you see that real life is all about fishing and family.
I feel very much at home here and I think it has a lot to do with the combination of beautiful buildings, gracious people and stunning beaches. The weather I am sure is fantastic
all year round and there is a clear sense that people enjoy their lives on this Island and that work can be hard but life is good. They seem to prize public art and cultural endeavors highly, much like they do in Barcelona and you can see that the natural beauty of the island has not been ruined by so called progress and there is a sense of true harmony here.
I visited the Le Seo Cathedral while mom sat at the marina and did some people watching. The cathedral is enormous and although there is so much to appreciate in and around it what struck me most were the vibrant stain glass windows and this three story gold and enamel sculpture of the story of Jesus
that adorns the far left wall. It was unlike anything I had seen before i
n a church and certainly made me pause and appreciate the intensity and the artistry. Below the Cathedral is the Almudaina Place and park area around it which reminded me very much of a Mayan ruin rebuilt and enhanced with lots of wonderful plant life.
